Real Madrid in Turmoil: Examining the Crisis Gripping the Bernabéu

Federico Valverde (right) was reportedly hospitalized with a head injury following an alleged dressing room altercation with Aurelien Tchouameni.

What should have been a week of intense focus on a high-stakes El Clasico against Barcelona has instead been overshadowed by reports of internal conflict and crisis within the Real Madrid dressing room.

A defeat against Barcelona on Sunday would effectively hand their fiercest rivals their second consecutive La Liga title.

But while Barca – who were themselves in turmoil not so long ago – continue to thrive, Real Madrid appears to be grappling with internal strife, fueled by fan discontent, managerial uncertainty, and allegations of player disputes.

BBC Sport examines the events of the past week and explores why they have reignited concerns about a season that has been unraveling both on and off the pitch.

Reports initially surfaced in the Spanish media on Wednesday, suggesting that midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni engaged in a heated verbal exchange during training.

Valverde subsequently confirmed the disagreement, and the situation reportedly escalated on Thursday at Real’s training facility.

Sources have indicated to BBC Sport that the argument continued after training, allegedly culminating in Valverde being taken to a hospital with a head injury following an altercation in the dressing room.

Valverde later refuted reports of a physical fight between the two, claiming the injury occurred when he “accidentally hit a table” during the confrontation.

In a detailed statement released on Thursday evening, the Uruguayan midfielder stated that he sustained “a small cut on my forehead that required a routine visit to the hospital” and denied allegations that either player had struck the other.

An emergency meeting was subsequently convened, involving club president Florentino Perez, members of the coaching staff, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, and captain Dani Carvajal.

Real Madrid later issued two statements.

The first confirmed that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against both players, adding that the club would provide updates “once the corresponding internal procedures have been completed.”

The second was a medical update confirming that Valverde had suffered a concussion and would require 10 to 14 days of rest, ruling him out of Sunday’s El Clasico.

“Clearly, someone here is spreading rumors, and with a season without titles, where Real Madrid is always under scrutiny, everything gets blown out of proportion,” Valverde stated.

On Friday, Real Madrid announced that the pair had “apologized to each other, the club, and their teammates” and had each been fined 500,000 euros (£432,037.50).

Injury row, yacht trip & petition – what’s going on with Mbappe?

Defender Alvaro Carreras also addressed reports this week linking him to a separate disagreement involving teammate Antonio Rudiger.

Carreras did not directly name the player, but wrote on Instagram: “In recent days, certain insinuations and comments about me have emerged that do not correspond to reality.

“Regarding the incident with a colleague, it is a specific matter of no relevance that has already been settled. My relationship with the whole team is very good.”

These reports of tension between specific players have followed broader claims of discord within the dressing room.

There has been increased focus on superstar forward Kylian Mbappe.

The French striker has scored 85 goals in 100 appearances since arriving at the Bernabeu, but was at the center of controversy when he traveled to Sardinia during a recovery period for a hamstring injury suffered against Real Betis.

While the trip was approved by the club, photographs of the forward on a yacht circulated online while Real Madrid was playing Espanyol, prompting criticism from supporters already frustrated by the team’s struggles.

An online petition titled ‘Mbappe out’ quickly gained traction on social media and now has more than 46 million signatures.

Alvaro Arbeloa stated that a decision regarding the forward’s availability for Sunday’s match would be made later this week.

What has happened between Valverde and Tchouameni?

These issues, coupled with the team’s relatively poor results, have shifted focus to head coach Alvaro Arbeloa and his apparent inability to maintain control of the dressing room during this turbulent period.

The former Real Madrid defender succeeded Xabi Alonso, who held the role for six months, in January.

His lack of senior managerial experience was a prominent talking point from the moment of his appointment, with questions raised about the ability of someone who had only previously worked within the youth setup to manage established stars such as Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.

This week’s events have validated those concerns for many supporters.

With only four matches remaining this season for Real Madrid, Arbeloa’s immediate priority will be to restore stability, refocus the squad, and prevent further deterioration in performance and discipline.

While silverware is no longer a realistic target, there remains a need to finish the campaign with some semblance of control.

Beyond the short term, however, the focus is already shifting towards the broader structure above him.

There is now pressure on club president Florentino Perez, who faces a major decision following a series of managerial changes that have failed to deliver sustained success.

Three managers. Two seasons. No trophies.

The choice of the next permanent head coach will be pivotal, not only for results on the pitch but also for restoring stability and control over a squad that appears difficult to manage.

That, in turn, will repair the image of a club that is receiving uncomfortable public criticism and, they will hope, return them to the top of the club game.
