Cristian Volpato and Tete Yengi were late call-ups to the training squad
Livingston forward Tete Yengi and former Italy Under-21 winger Cristian Volpato have been named to Australia’s 26-man squad for the World Cup, despite being late additions to Tony Popovic’s pre-tournament training group.
However, Hibernian forward Martin Boyle, with 41 caps, is among those who will miss the competition.
Yengi had been loaned by Livingston to Japanese side Machida Zelvia in January, even as his parent club battled to avoid relegation from the Scottish Premiership.
The 25-year-old impressed Popovic after scoring six goals in 22 appearances, helping his new team finish third in Japan’s East Region and reach the Asian Champions League final.
Meanwhile, FIFA, the world governing body, ratified Sassuolo’s 22-year-old Volpato’s decision to switch allegiances on Friday.
Former Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Mat Ryan, now with Levante, and Melbourne City striker Mathew Leckie are poised to equal the national record by appearing in their fourth World Cup.
Former Dundee United left-back Aziz Behich, currently with Melbourne, and ex-Hull City midfielder Jackson Irvine, now at St Pauli, are on track for their third appearances.
Heart of Midlothian midfielder Cammy Devlin and Aberdeen-born Leicester City centre-half Harry Souttar, whose brother John is in the Scotland squad, are among those selected for their second.
Also included are Swansea City centre-half Cameron Burgess, Watford winger Nestory Irankunda, and Norwich City striker Mohamed Toure.
Popovic commented: “Some difficult decisions had to be made – that’s the nature of major tournaments.
“But it’s also a credit to all the players involved over the past few weeks who worked extremely hard during an extended and challenging pre-camp.”
Former Hearts defender Kye Rowles, now with DC United, was also a late addition to the training squad but did not make the final cut.
Australia will face Switzerland in their final pre-tournament friendly on Saturday before beginning their World Cup campaign against Turkey on June 14.
