Late Bayern Pressure Falls Short as PSG Secure Champions League Final Berth

Luis Enrique’s demonstrated ability to rebuild both team culture and footballing strategy suggests Arsenal will face a formidable and complete Paris St-Germain side in the Champions League final.

A colossal banner urging Bayern Munich to “Shoot us into the final” greeted the players amidst an electrifying atmosphere on Wednesday, as the home side sought to overturn a 5-4 aggregate deficit from the thrilling first leg in Paris.

However, it was PSG who answered the call, delivering an early blow in the third minute. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s exceptional run down the wing culminated in a pass to Ousmane Dembele, who unleashed a powerful shot past Manuel Neuer.

Harry Kane’s late goal for Bayern, securing a draw on the night, offered little solace, arriving in the match’s final moments.

Shortly after, PSG celebrated their advancement to a second consecutive final – an opportunity to defend the title they emphatically won with a 5-0 victory over Inter Milan last season.

Luis Enrique celebrated on the Allianz Arena pitch, echoing his celebrations from the 2025 final, as PSG provided further compelling evidence of their status as one of the great teams in recent history.

Arsenal can draw confidence from their first Champions League final appearance in 20 years, but the magnitude of the challenge they face on May 30th in Hungary is undeniable.

Gunners’ manager Mikel Arteta must overcome a master strategist and inspirational footballing figure in his PSG counterpart, Luis Enrique.

Luis Enrique assumed the role of Paris St-Germain manager in the summer of 2023.

The Spanish coach is the architect of this new PSG, rebuilding from the foundations of the previous superstar era. During that time Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar were the focal points of a dysfunctional, ego-driven team that never achieved its potential.

Luis Enrique, who also triumphantly led Barcelona to a Champions League title in 2015, mandated that players leave egos at the door – or be removed from the team.

He implemented a blend of individual brilliance with a strong work ethic and defensive stability, creating a formidable challenge for Arsenal to overcome.

At the heart of the team is Marquinhos.

The Brazilian centre-back joined PSG from Roma in 2013. He survived Luis Enrique’s overhaul because the coach recognized his professionalism and world-class defensive ability.

He has formed a formidable partnership with Willian Pacho, who played a crucial role in containing Kane until the England captain’s late goal.

Kvaratskhelia and Dembele combined to create the game’s decisive moment, while 20-year-old Desire Doue – a symbol of the new PSG – caused problems for Bayern, coming close to scoring on multiple occasions in the second half.

Yet, Marquinhos remains the key figure, consistently demonstrating composure and exceptional positioning at 31 years old.

PSG’s midfield, comprising Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, and Joao Neves, forms a well-coordinated engine room, seamlessly connecting the team.

Ruiz’s pass leading up to Dembele’s goal was exquisite. Subsequently, he diligently executed the defensive duties demanded by Luis Enrique, a task his teammates embraced.

The tactical fluidity that makes PSG so impressive

An obsessive who lived through tragedy – can Luis Enrique deliver PSG dream?

Luis Enrique inherited a PSG team with disjointed components. He has reshaped the team to work together efficiently.

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock told BBC Match Of The Day: “It is very difficult to look past PSG as winners in Budapest. They are so strong in every area. The only weakness I really see in the team is their goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.

“One of the issues Arsenal will have is trying to contain the PSG full-backs. That means asking Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard, who will probably be on the wings, to then contain the full-backs and stick with them, and also go the other way and attack them as well.”

Warnock added: “It is going to be very difficult for Arsenal to keep this PSG side out because you can’t sit back against them for long periods of time.

“The one thing you’d say is that, if you sit off them, then Bradley Barcola, Doue and Kvaratskhelia are good enough in one-v-one situations, with Dembele as well, to be able to beat you individually.

“Whichever way you look at them, they are a brilliant team and you struggle to find any weakness. You look right through the pitch and think ‘where is the weakness?'”

PSG showcased their capabilities in the 6-5 aggregate win over Bayern, demonstrating both dazzling attacking play in the first leg and disciplined defending to hold off the Bundesliga champions in the return fixture.

Similar qualities were on display against Liverpool in the quarter-final, winning at Anfield for the second successive season, and leveraging defensive strength to secure a 4-0 aggregate win over England’s reigning champions.

Ousmane Dembele has now scored seven goals in the Champions League this season

Dembele’s transformation exemplified the Parisians’ attitude. Once an expensive misfit at Barcelona, he has been shaped into a potential Ballon d’Or contender under Luis Enrique, celebrating a won tackle with the same enthusiasm as his goal.

This image encapsulated the profound transformation instilled by PSG’s head coach.

PSG’s journey in Munich was far from easy.

Fueled by fervent support, Bayern relentlessly challenged PSG. However, they ultimately encountered a superior team.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, analyzing for TNT Sports, noted: “A couple of years ago they had prima donnas, egos in the team but [Luis Enrique] wasn’t having it.

“He pushed them aside and built a team on work-rate and principles. This team could dominate for years to come. They are that good.”

Until the final whistle, PSG’s players maintained maximum effort. Any threatening balls into the box were met with a wall of defenders.

This is the challenge Arsenal and Arteta must overcome in Budapest.

In essence, the Gunners must defeat the team currently recognized as the best in Europe.
