Torreense’s previous cup final appearance was in 1956
In a stunning upset, second division side Torreense defeated reigning champions Sporting in the Portuguese Cup final, securing victory with a late penalty in extra time.
Kevin Zohi gave Torreense an early lead, scoring just three minutes into the match, but Sporting’s Luis Suarez responded with an equalizer early in the second half for the 18-time champions.
The match turned dramatically in extra time when Sporting’s Uruguay left-back, Maximiliano Araujo, was sent off after conceding a penalty, which Cape Verde defender Stopira converted to secure the win.
This triumph marks the first major trophy in Torreense’s 109-year history and earns them a place in next season’s Europa League.
Torreense hails from Torres Vedras, a town located 25 miles north of Lisbon, and plays their home games in a stadium with a capacity of approximately 2,500.
The club’s only previous appearance in the Portuguese Cup final was in 1956, when they were defeated by Porto.
Adding to their success, Torreense is also vying for promotion to the top flight, with their play-off tie against Casa Pia level at 0-0 heading into Thursday’s second leg.
Sporting, who finished second in the league this season, had previously achieved a league and cup double last year.
