A seven-month-old baby girl was fatally shot while sitting in her stroller in New York City in “broad daylight,” according to police reports.
Authorities believe the infant, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was an unintended victim of a shooting linked to gang activity.
Surveillance footage indicates two men on a motorcycle traveling against traffic in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated the passenger discharged “at least two rounds” from a firearm.
The motorcycle subsequently crashed, leading to the apprehension of a suspect believed to be the shooter, while a widespread search is underway for the driver, police officials confirmed.
Lianna Charles-Moore, the baby’s mother, shared her grief with CBS, the BBC’s U.S. partner, saying, “She’s gone, and I can’t ever see her again.”
“I can’t smell her, can’t kiss her. I can’t wake up and feed her her bottle.”
“I can’t dress her. Everything I wanted to do with her, I can’t do with her anymore.”
As of now, no formal charges have been filed in connection with the shooting.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani commented, “A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant.”
“Today is a devastating reminder of how much more work there is to be done to combat gun violence across this city.”
The incident occurred on a street corner where several adults and children, including two in strollers, were present when gunfire erupted on Wednesday.
CBS News reports that baby Kaori’s parents sought refuge in a nearby store, where they discovered their child had been shot.
Witness Bernius Maldonado stated, “All the kids started ducking in the corner. The family went to the store and the mom started screaming when she noticed the baby was bleeding from [her] head.”
Video footage obtained by the New York Post from inside the store captures the moment the child’s mother notices the injuries as she is about to pick up her infant.
The mother’s reaction is one of distress, jumping with her hands behind her head.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene at 13:21 local time (17:21 GMT).
Kaori was transported to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities have confirmed that no other individuals were killed or injured in the incident.
“As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them,” Tisch expressed during a press conference. “It is unspeakable.”
Police have obtained footage showing the suspects colliding with a vehicle shortly after the shooting.
Tisch noted that both suspects were ejected from the moped, and the rear passenger’s impact was severe enough that he lost “both of his shoes.”
An ambulance was called for the injured man, who was transported to Brooklyn Hospital, where he was taken into police custody.
Investigators report that the suspect’s clothing and appearance match the description of the gunman, but he was taken into custody as part of an unrelated investigation.
