Train Derailment Near Barcelona Kills One, Injures Several, Reports Indicate

Reports from local media indicate a train driver has died, and at least 14 others sustained injuries, following a commuter train derailment and subsequent crash near Barcelona.

Local officials stated that the Rodalies train collided with a retaining wall that collapsed onto the tracks between Gelida and Sant Sadurní on Tuesday evening.

Emergency services are currently assessing the extent of injuries suffered by passengers.

The incident occurred amidst severe storms impacting northeastern Spain.

According to emergency services, eleven ambulances are present at the scene in Gelida, Catalonia – approximately 35km (21.7 miles) west of Barcelona – providing treatment to the injured.

The local fire service reported deploying 35 crews to the location, where they rescued one passenger who was trapped within the train.

Emergency services have confirmed the evacuation of injured individuals to nearby hospitals, including Moisès Broggi, Bellvitge, and Vila Franca hospitals.

Numerous coastal regions in eastern and northwestern Spain are under high alert due to adverse weather conditions. Snowstorms have also been reported in the Spanish Pyrenees, along with coastal storms in Menorca generating waves several meters high.

This incident in Catalonia follows a collision between two high-speed trains in Adamuz, Andalusia, just two days prior, marking one of Spain’s most significant rail accidents in over a decade.

At least 42 fatalities have been confirmed after carriages of a Madrid-bound train derailed, crossed onto opposing tracks, and collided with an oncoming high-speed train.

Authorities report that the mangled wreckage is hindering efforts to recover those still trapped inside.

Investigators are still determining the cause of Sunday’s fatal crash in southern Spain.
