BBC Reports: Tensions High at Iranian-Armenian Border

For more than two weeks, Iran has been gripped by widespread demonstrations. According to a human rights organization, the protests have resulted in over 2,600 deaths.

Authorities have responded to the protests with lethal force, amidst a near-total shutdown of internet and communication services.

Reporting from the Iranian-Armenian border, the BBC’s Middle East correspondent, Hugo Bachega, highlighted the “anger and frustration” felt by Iranians and their anxieties regarding the nation’s future.

He added, “People are simply terrified to join the demonstrations.”

The Iranian government has characterized the protests as “riots” instigated by the country’s adversaries.

The demonstrations, which began on December 28th over economic grievances, have evolved into demands for the removal of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Hosseini Khamenei.
