Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey, known for their roles in the upcoming “Wicked” films, are set to reunite for a revival of the acclaimed musical “Sunday in the Park with George.”
The actors hinted at the collaboration via Instagram, sharing a photograph of themselves positioned before Georges Seurat’s iconic painting that serves as the musical’s inspiration, accompanied by lyrics from the show.
The Barbican Theatre in London has confirmed that the highly anticipated production will grace its stage in the summer of 2027.
Originally conceived by the celebrated composer Stephen Sondheim and playwright James Lapine, “Sunday in the Park with George” premiered on Broadway in 1984 to widespread acclaim.
Grande and Bailey have recently garnered attention for portraying Glinda and Fiyero, respectively, in the film adaptation of “Wicked” and its forthcoming sequel, “For Good.”
Their performances have solidified their status as prominent figures in Hollywood, with Grande receiving an Oscar nomination in the past year.
The pair will aim to captivate theatre audiences as they transition from the Land of Oz to London’s theatrical landscape.
“Sunday in the Park with George” draws inspiration from French painter Georges Seurat’s masterpiece, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” and presents a fictionalized narrative of the artist’s dedication to his work.
The central character, engrossed by a particular hat featured in his painting, sings “all it has to be is good,” a lyric echoed in the co-stars’ Instagram announcement.
While specific roles remain undisclosed, the musical’s principal female character is Dot, Georges’s lover.
The narrative explores the growing distance between the couple as Georges becomes increasingly consumed by his artistic pursuits.
Grande is already scheduled to perform in London for ten dates at The O2 in August and September of 2026 as part of her Eternal Sunshine Tour.
In November, she suggested that it could be her last tour for a considerable period. However, her recent social media post with Bailey suggests that she’s not abandoning the stage altogether.
Tickets for the highly anticipated revival are slated to go on sale in May.
