Martin Clunes Set to Portray Huw Edwards in Upcoming Drama

Martin Clunes, renowned for his role in “Doc Martin,” is set to portray former BBC presenter Huw Edwards in an upcoming drama.

The two-part factual series, tentatively titled “Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards,” will chronicle the trajectory of Edwards, a once-esteemed figure in British broadcasting, as he became embroiled in a highly publicized scandal that ultimately led to a suspended prison sentence.

Edwards, whose career began in Wales before he rose to prominence as one of the BBC’s highest-paid newsreaders, anchored “News at Ten” for numerous years.

During his tenure, he presided over some of the most significant events in recent British history, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II, before pleading guilty to making indecent images of children in July 2024.

Clunes will embody the Bridgend-born newsreader in the series, produced by Channel 5, which aims to meticulously recount the unfolding of the scandal and feature exclusive interviews with individuals who were instrumental in reporting the story.

Ben Frow, chief content officer at Channel 5, stated: “This is a compelling and disturbing narrative of how an individual in a position of authority and trust ultimately betrayed that very trust.

“By securing exclusive access to key individuals involved and those who investigated the story, we will delve into the human impact concealed behind the headlines.”

Edwards’ career concluded in disgrace following a report by The Sun in July 2023, alleging that a “top BBC Star” had remunerated a teenager for sexually explicit images.

Days later, his wife publicly identified him as the presenter at the heart of the scandal, leading to the newsreader’s resignation in April.

In June 2024, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police, he was charged with three counts of creating indecent images of children related to WhatsApp exchanges with a man identified as Alex Williams.

Edwards entered a guilty plea to the charges the following month, acknowledging the presence of 41 photographs on WhatsApp, including seven classified as being of the most serious nature.

He was sentenced to a six-month prison term, suspended for two years, and placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of seven years.

The forthcoming series will be directed by Michael Samuels, renowned for his work on British dramas such as “The Windermere Children” and “Any Human Heart.”

Clostridium perfringens, a bacterium causing stomach cramps and diarrhoea, was identified as the source of the outbreak.
