Nick Reiner, son of acclaimed film director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of the couple’s bodies at their Los Angeles residence.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the arrest of Nick Reiner, 32, on Monday, stating that he is currently in custody without bail.

According to sources cited by CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, the couple’s 28-year-old daughter, Romy, discovered her parents at their home on Sunday, noting they had sustained multiple stab wounds.

Rob Reiner is renowned for directing a diverse range of iconic films, including “When Harry Met Sally,” “This is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “Misery,” and “A Few Good Men.”

Emergency services were dispatched to the Reiners’ home in Brentwood, California, at approximately 3:38 p.m. local time (23:38 GMT) on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that two individuals, later identified as Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 68, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities stated that Nick Reiner was apprehended several hours later, around 9:15 p.m. local time on Sunday. The motive remains undisclosed, and the investigation is ongoing.

Nick Reiner has previously spoken openly about his battles with addiction and homelessness, experiences that served as the basis for the semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie,” a collaborative project with his father in 2015.

The Reiner family home is situated in Brentwood, an affluent enclave known for its celebrity residents, expansive estates, and upscale boutiques and restaurants. On Monday morning, a security presence was observed outside the residence as media gathered near the front gate.

Rob Reiner, son of the legendary comedian Carl Reiner, began his career in the 1960s and achieved widespread recognition for his role as Meathead in the television sitcom “All in The Family.”

He further solidified his success with the 1984 cult classic mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” which he both directed and starred in.

Reiner was previously married to “Laverne & Shirley” actress Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and is the adoptive father of Marshall’s daughter, actress Tracy Reiner.

He married Michele Reiner in 1989, whom he reportedly met during the production of the romantic comedy-drama “When Harry Met Sally.” The couple have three children together.

Michele Reiner was an accomplished actress, photographer, and producer, as well as the founder of Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company.

Rob Reiner was also known for his outspoken political activism and support for Democratic candidates.

In a post referring to the deaths as “very sad,” former President Donald Trump criticized Reiner, suggesting their deaths “reportedly” stemmed from the “anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction” with “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump,” the former president wrote.

The reports the former president alluded to remain unclear, and while the investigation is being treated as a homicide, police have not commented on any potential motive.

The term “Trump Derangement Syndrome” was frequently used by the former president and his allies to describe those critical of him. Reiner was a vocal critic of Trump’s policies and administration.

Several Republicans, including former ally Marjorie Taylor Greene, criticized Trump’s post, stating that the deaths represent “a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”

“Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder,” she said.

Trump’s post also elicited strong reactions from friends of the Reiners.

In a post on X, Maria Shriver, the former First Lady of California and a longtime friend of the Reiners, described the couple as “devoted parents.”

“They deeply loved all their children and they never gave up trying to care for them,” she added.

Sir Elton John, who appeared in this year’s “Spinal Tap” sequel, expressed his disbelief, stating: “I am in disbelief at today’s news of Rob and Michele.”

“They were two of the most beautiful people I’d ever met and they deserved better.”

Actor John Cusack, who starred in Reiner’s 1985 film “The Sure Thing,” called him “a great man,” while Elijah Wood, who appeared in 1994’s “North,” expressed his horror at the couple’s deaths.
