June Lockhart, widely recognized for her iconic roles in television series such as “Lassie” and “Lost in Space,” has passed away at the age of 100.

The esteemed actress died of natural causes at her residence in Santa Monica on Thursday, according to a family spokesperson who confirmed the news to U.S. media outlets.

Lockhart initially garnered significant attention on Broadway during the 1940s, earning a Tony Award for Best Newcomer for her performance in “For Love or Money,” before transitioning to a successful career in film and television.

The daughter of celebrated character actors Kathleen and Gene Lockhart, she is particularly remembered for her portrayal of mother Ruth Martin in the television series “Lassie,” a role for which she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Born in New York City on June 25, 1925, Lockhart made her screen debut at the age of 13 in the 1938 film “A Christmas Carol,” appearing alongside her parents.

She subsequently held a variety of supporting roles throughout the 1940s, eventually taking the leading role in the film “She-Wolf of London.”

Her performance in “For Love or Money” on Broadway was lauded by The New York Times as “enchanting.”

This role led to her receiving a Tony Award, a Donaldson Award, a Theatre World Award, and an Associated Press citation as Woman of the Year for Drama.

From the late 1950s into the 1960s, she dedicated her time to starring in 200 episodes of “Lassie,” after which she made guest appearances on shows such as “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” and “Magnum, P.I.”

She is also fondly remembered for her role in the science-fiction series “Lost in Space,” where she played the compassionate matriarch of a family of space explorers from 1965 to 1968.

In 2021, Lockhart made a cameo appearance in a Netflix reboot of “Lost in Space,” lending her voice to the character of Alpha Control.

“She was very happy up until the very end, reading The New York Times and LA Times every day,” said Lyle Gregory, a spokesperson and friend of 40 years, to U.S. media.

“It was very important to her to stay focused on the news of the day.”

She is survived by her two daughters, including Anne Lockhart, who is also an actress.

Carl Wilson-Downie says appearing alongside Julia Roberts in her new film is a “career highlight”.
