Tony Caunter, best known for his role as Roy Evans in the BBC’s “EastEnders,” has died at the age of 88, according to a statement from his family.
Caunter portrayed a car dealer who became a love interest for Pat Butcher, played by Pam St Clement, on the long-running British soap opera from 1994 to 2003.
The family’s statement indicated that he passed away “peacefully” on Monday evening at Eastbourne District General Hospital, just eight days after the death of his wife of 63 years, Fran.
“It is with enormous sadness that we bring the curtain down on our wonderful and hugely loved father,” the statement read.
Caunter is survived by a daughter, three sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, the family confirmed.
“He will be missed by all,” they added.
The family expressed their gratitude to the staff at the East Sussex hospital for their “incredible care” during his final hours, as well as to the team at the Eastbourne Gardens nursing home for their “care and compassion” in recent months.
Concluding their statement, the family requested privacy “at this extremely difficult time.”
During Caunter’s tenure as Roy Evans, a notable storyline involved Pat’s affair with her former partner, Frank Butcher, played by Mike Reid.
His on-screen son was Barry Evans, portrayed by Shaun Williamson, who met a dramatic end when he was pushed off a cliff in a memorable episode.
Beyond “EastEnders,” Caunter’s acting credits include appearances in “Pennies From Heaven,” “Tumbledown,” and the television series “Juliet Bravo.”
He also featured in the TV drama series “Boon,” alongside fellow “EastEnders” actor Michael Elphick.
In a statement, “EastEnders” paid tribute: “Tony will forever be loved and respected by everyone at EastEnders for his warmth, kindness and humour as well as being greatly remembered by all those at home who instantly took Roy to their hearts.”
