Authorities report that at least one individual has been killed and nine others wounded after a shooting at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
According to officials, the incident occurred during a Sunday service at the church, located approximately 60 miles (96 km) northwest of Detroit, which typically draws a large congregation.
Law enforcement indicates the suspect, a 40-year-old male, allegedly drove a vehicle into the building and subsequently opened fire. Furthermore, a section of the church was reportedly set ablaze, though the fire has since been contained. Authorities have cautioned that additional victims may be discovered upon a thorough and safe entry into the building.
The alleged shooter was fatally shot by responding officers. Authorities have stated that there is no further threat to the public.
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye informed reporters that “hundreds” of people were present for services at approximately 10:25 local time (15:25 GMT) when the suspect drove a vehicle into the church.
The attacker then reportedly commenced firing an assault-style rifle, discharging “several rounds at individuals within the church,” according to Chief Renye.
Police officers responded swiftly to the scene, Chief Renye stated, adding that officers “engaged in gunfire with that particular individual, neutralizing that suspect.”
Nine individuals sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Some of the victims “are in critical condition,” authorities confirmed.
“We are still trying to determine exactly when and where the fire ended up coming from and how it got started,” the police chief stated. “We believe it was deliberately set, though, by the suspect.”
The suspect’s identity has not yet been released. Investigators are currently conducting a search of the individual’s property and analyzing his cell-phone records in an effort to ascertain a motive.
Grand Blanc police have confirmed that 100 FBI agents have been deployed to provide assistance with the ongoing investigation.
President Donald Trump has stated that he has been briefed on the shooting and affirmed that the FBI will be leading the federal investigation.
In a statement on Truth Social, he characterized the incident as “yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”
US Attorney General Pam Bondi stated in a post on X that she had received briefings on “what appears to be a horrific shooting and fire” at the church.
“Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling,” Bondi remarked. “Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy.”
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the incident, stating: “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” and added that she is actively monitoring the situation.
