Darth Vader Lightsaber Prop Achieves Record-Breaking £2.7M at Auction

A lightsaber wielded by Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy has fetched $3.6 million (£2.7 million) at auction.

The iconic prop, prominently featured in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” was hailed as the highlight of the opening day of sales at the Los Angeles-based auction on Thursday.

According to Propstore, the auction house based in Buckinghamshire, this sale marks the highest price ever achieved for a Star Wars artifact at auction.

Brandon Alinger, Propstore’s chief operating officer, stated, “To witness a Star Wars lightsaber – the very symbol of one of cinema’s most significant sagas – become the most valuable piece from the franchise ever sold at auction is an extraordinary moment.”

The prop, used extensively during filming at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, was described by Alinger as among the most recognizable props in cinematic history.

While the auction was held in California, numerous lots originated from UK productions, including a bullwhip, belt, and holster crafted for Harrison Ford in the 1989 film “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” which sold for $485,100 (£360,000).

Other notable memorabilia included a Platform 9 3/4 sign used in several of the original Harry Potter films, initially estimated to sell for between $20,000 (£14,925) and $40,000 (£29,850), but ultimately achieving a price of $138,600 (£102,573).

Alinger added, “This result represents a landmark, not only for Propstore but for the broader realm of film memorabilia collecting.”

“It underscores the enduring cultural impact of Star Wars and the deep connection fans and collectors have with these artifacts as symbols of modern mythology.”
