Cardi B has testified in court, denying allegations that she assaulted a security guard who is pursuing legal action against her.
Emani Ellis alleges that the American rapper injured her cheek with a 3-inch fingernail and spat on her during an altercation that occurred outside an obstetrician’s office in Los Angeles in 2018. Ms. Ellis claims to have been “deeply traumatized” by the incident.
During Tuesday’s civil trial, Cardi B stated that Ms. Ellis filmed and followed her against her will upon her arrival for an appointment concerning a pregnancy that was not yet public knowledge.
The recording artist acknowledged confronting Ms. Ellis but refuted claims of assault. “I didn’t touch her,” the rapper stated. “It was like a verbal fight, but it didn’t get physical at all.”
The performer behind hits like “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It” informed jurors that upon exiting an elevator, Ms. Ellis, who was employed as a security guard in the building, alerted someone on the phone to her presence and subsequently followed her down a hallway.
The artist, whose legal name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, further testified that Ms. Ellis appeared to record her on her phone, thereby invading her privacy and refusing to “back up,” which led to a face-to-face “verbal altercation.”
She admitted to directing an obscenity at Ms. Ellis while demanding she “get out of my face,” adding, “We’re literally screaming at each other.”
The star’s legal representative emphasized that she “feared for her unborn baby” and further accused Ms. Ellis of “changing your story.”
Ms. Ellis previously told the court that she exclaimed the rapper’s name out of excitement upon seeing her but denied informing anyone of her presence or filming her.
Ms. Ellis alleges that the rapper accused her of attempting to leak information about her visit to the doctor’s office, followed by insults, threats, and a physical attack.
A plastic surgeon testified that he treated Ms. Ellis for a “hyper-sensitive” scar on her cheek, “most likely” caused by fingernails, following an initial examination in 2022.
Ms. Ellis initiated legal proceedings against the star in 2020, citing assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and false imprisonment.
