Downton Abbey Memorabilia Auctioned Ahead of Final Film

As anticipation builds for the release of the third and final Downton Abbey film this September, devoted fans now have an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a piece of the beloved series’ legacy.

An array of props, costumes, and set pieces from across the acclaimed series are being offered at auction to benefit charity. The items are currently showcased in a free exhibition in London.

Notable lots include the iconic bell wall from the servants’ hall, with an estimated value of £5,000 to £7,000, and the Crawley family’s distinguished 1925 Sunbeam automobile, projected to fetch between £25,000 and £35,000.

The exhibition, hosted by Bonhams on New Bond Street, will remain open to the public until the auction concludes on September 16.

The period drama, renowned for its meticulous detail, was primarily filmed at Highclere Castle in Hampshire, with recent filming for the latest installment also taking place in North Yorkshire.

Additional locations featured in the TV series encompass Bampton, Cogges Manor Farm, and Kingston Bagpuize House in Oxfordshire, as well as Basildon Park in Berkshire.

Charlie Thomas, Bonhams UK Group Director, lauded the Sunbeam as “an iconic vehicle,” noting, “It features a letter rack, ashtrays, and what appears to be a tiny sunroof – but it’s actually a chimney, a nod to the smoking habits of the era.”

The costume selection includes six exquisite wedding dresses, among them Lady Mary’s gown from her marriage to Matthew Crawley in season three.

“The lace, the embroidery, and the intricate beading exemplify an extraordinary level of detail,” Mr. Thomas remarked.

Items worn by the Dowager Countess of Grantham, portrayed by the late Dame Maggie Smith, are also included in the auction.

Reflecting on Downton’s global appeal, Dame Penelope Wilton, who played the widowed Isobel Crawley, observed, “Julian Fellowes crafted 18 leading characters from all walks of life, and it’s ultimately about family. People connect with that, recognizing the relationships in their own lives.”

“I believe it’s the opportune moment to bid farewell,” she added. “It’s always best to leave on a high note.”

Proceeds from the auction will benefit Together for Short Lives, a charity dedicated to supporting children with life-limiting conditions and their families.
