DJ Calvin Harris has sparked a mixed reaction from fans after announcing the birth of his son.
The Scottish DJ, who is married to Radio 1 presenter Vick Hope, celebrated his wife as a “superhero” in an Instagram post featuring a series of images taken in Ibiza, documenting the moments following their son Micah’s home birth.
The post included a photograph of Vick’s placenta, alongside images appearing to depict the organ being dehydrated and processed into pills.
While many offered congratulations to the couple, others expressed surprise at the graphic nature of the image, which has since been subject to an age restriction by the social media platform.
Calvin Harris informed his 11 million followers that his son was born on 20 July, expressing his gratitude for the new addition to their family.
Among the celebrities congratulating the couple were singer Example and Scottish footballer Andy Robertson, in addition to Radio 1 presenter Arielle Free, who welcomed “wee Micah” to the world.
Singer Becky Hill was among those who supported the decision to share images of the placenta.
“Amazing we grow a whole new organ to provide life!” she wrote.
“Good job not wasting it either, that’s some goddess magic right there!”
Some commenters also lauded the post for “normalising” the postpartum experience.
However, some questioned the necessity of including the photo without a content warning, while others voiced their surprise.
“I was NOT prepared for the placenta pic,” one user wrote, with another commenting: “Placenta and placenta pills were not on my bingo card for today but OK.”
The placenta is an organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy, providing oxygen and nutrients to the fetus.
It also serves as a filter, protecting the fetus from toxins and pollutants.
Some individuals believe that consuming the placenta after childbirth offers various health benefits for new mothers.
Preparation methods vary, including consuming the organ raw or cooked.
Some parents opt to have the placenta dehydrated and processed into vitamin-style tablets through a process known as encapsulation.
However, a review of 10 scientific studies conducted in 2015 found no evidence to support claims that eating the placenta provides any health benefits.
Organizations such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have cautioned against potential contamination risks if the organ is not properly stored and prepared.
