President Donald Trump has reinstated the Presidential Fitness Test in public schools, marking a return to the program.
Originally established in the 1950s, the Presidential Fitness Test assessed the health and athleticism of young individuals through exercises such as sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, and a sit-and-reach test. The program also featured a competitive element, recognizing top performers with the Presidential Fitness Award.
The test was discontinued in 2012 and replaced with an alternative fitness program during Barack Obama’s presidency.
Bernd Debusmann of the BBC examines the history of the test and the reactions it has garnered from Americans.
