Miley Cyrus Expresses Lack of Desire to Tour

Miley Cyrus has stated she has “no desire” to embark on a tour, just weeks after the release of her ninth studio album.

The American singer cited the challenges of maintaining sobriety and prioritizing mental health while on tour as key deterrents.

It has been over a decade since Cyrus’s last major tour, which supported her 2014 album “Bangerz.” Fans have expressed disappointment at her lack of touring plans.

Speaking on “Good Morning America,” the artist, known for hits like “Flowers” and “Party in the U.S.A,” expressed concerns about the level of support available to artists while touring.

“I do have the physical ability, and I have the opportunities to tour,” she stated on the program Tuesday.

“I wish I had the desire, but I don’t.”

She further explained that “it was really hard to maintain sobriety when you’re out on the road,” emphasizing that sobriety is “a really important pillar of stability in my life.”

Cyrus’s latest album, “Something Beautiful,” was released at the end of May. While she hasn’t toured, she has made stage appearances, including a performance alongside Beyoncé as part of the “Cowboy Carter” show in Paris last month.

Her comments on touring follow a recent revelation on an Apple Music podcast about a rare condition affecting her vocal cords.

Cyrus stated that the condition, known as Reinke’s edema, poses challenges for touring due to its tendency to cause significant vocal fry.

Phoebe Ross, a long-time Miley Cyrus fan, expressed her disappointment to BBC Newsbeat, stating, “But obviously her reasoning is very valid.”

“Millions of fans are going to be disappointed, but at the end of the day you’ve got to think she’s putting herself first for a reason,” she says.

“With touring there’s so much pressure and so much stress. She’s doing what she thinks is right.

“I think as fans we’ve got to back that.”

Fan Monica Taylor says after not touring for so long, Miley’s decision is especially disappointing “for those that have been lifelong fans and never had the chance to see her”.

“I think the interview just kind of felt like she doesn’t want to do anything,” she says, adding she’s keeping her fingers crossed the singer might consider a shorter tour or festival shows.

“I think all of us are holding out hope on that.”

For up and coming artists like Romz, a 25-year-old rapper and singer from London, it’s hard to imagine not wanting to go on tour.

“Performing in front of thousands of people every night, personally that’s my dream,” she tells Newsbeat, adding that touring is important for having a connection with your fans.

“But, I get it for artists that have done it for so long that it can take a toll on their mental health,” Romz adds.

“Every artist has a different mindset, and maybe Miley, she’s like it’s just not for me and that’s completely OK.”

Romz agrees with Miley that there should be “a more caring system” for artists on tour, saying artists’ wellbeing can be overlooked.

“I wish to do shows like [Miley] in the future but I’ve only done gigs at the moment around London,” she says.

“So I don’t actually know how it feels to do a show in front of 20-30,000 fans every single night.”
