Miley Cyrus has stated she has “no desire” to embark on a tour, just weeks after the release of her ninth studio album.
The American singer cited the difficulties of maintaining sobriety and prioritizing mental health while on tour as key factors in her decision.
It has been over a decade since Cyrus’s last major tour, which supported her 2014 album, Bangerz, leaving many fans disappointed by the lack of plans for future performances.
In an interview on Good Morning America, the artist behind hits like “Flowers” and “Party in the U.S.A” expressed concerns about the insufficient support systems available for artists during touring.
“I do have the physical ability, and I have the opportunities to tour,” she told the US program on Tuesday.
“I wish I had the desire, but I don’t.”
She also emphasized that maintaining sobriety on the road is “really hard” and that sobriety is “a really important pillar of stability in my life”.
Cyrus’s latest album, Something Beautiful, was released at the end of May. While she has abstained from touring, she has made notable stage appearances, including joining Beyoncé during her Cowboy Carter show in Paris last month.
Her recent comments on touring follow a prior revelation on an Apple Music podcast about a rare vocal cord condition.
She explained that the condition, known as Reinke’s edema, poses challenges for touring due to its tendency to cause “the ultimate vocal fry.”
Phoebe Ross, a self-proclaimed “super-fan” of Cyrus since the age of five, had the opportunity to meet her idol earlier this year, courtesy of a surprise arranged by Greg James on his Radio 1 Breakfast show.
Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, the 20-year-old expressed her disappointment at the prospect of not being able to see Cyrus perform live on tour.
“But obviously her reasoning is very valid.”
“Millions of fans are going to be disappointed, but at the end of the day you’ve got to think she’s putting herself first for a reason,” she says.
“With touring there’s so much pressure and so much stress. She’s doing what she thinks is right.”
“I think as fans we’ve got to back that.”
However, Monica Taylor, another fan, voiced particular disappointment, stating that Cyrus’s decision is especially disheartening “for those that have been lifelong fans and never had the chance to see her.”
“I think the interview just kind of felt like she doesn’t want to do anything,” she says, adding she’s keeping her fingers crossed the singer might consider a shorter tour or festival shows.
“I think all of us are holding out hope on that.”
For emerging artists like Romz, a 25-year-old rapper and singer from London, the idea of not wanting to tour is difficult to grasp.
“Performing in front of thousands of people every night, personally that’s my dream,” she tells Newsbeat, emphasizing the importance of touring for connecting with fans.
“But, I get it for artists that have done it for so long that it can take a toll on their mental health,” Romz adds.
“Every artist has a different mindset, and maybe Miley, she’s like it’s just not for me and that’s completely OK.”
Romz supports Cyrus’s call for “a more caring system” for artists on tour, noting that artist well-being can be overlooked.
“I wish to do shows like [Miley] in the future but I’ve only done gigs at the moment around London,” she says.
“So I don’t actually know how it feels to do a show in front of 20-30,000 fans every single night.”
