Jane Birkin’s Iconic Handbag Fetches £7.4 Million: A Look at the Story Behind the Sale

Jane Birkin’s original Hermès bag has fetched a record €8.6 million (£7.4 million; $10.1 million) at auction in Paris.

The well-worn black leather bag, bearing marks from the singer’s personal touch, was initially conceived for her after an impromptu incident on a flight with the head of the luxury fashion house.

The prototype, crafted as a result of that encounter, was acquired by a Japanese private collector at Sotheby’s in Paris on Thursday, significantly surpassing the previous record sale of $513,000 (£378,000; €439,000).
