Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has responded to a letter from Donald Trump regarding the imposition of tariffs on imports of Kazakh goods, according to a statement released by Akorda.
“The Head of State emphasized that Kazakhstan, as a long-standing trade and investment partner of the United States of America, is committed to the development of fair, predictable, and mutually beneficial trade relations,” the statement noted.
Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s readiness to continue a constructive dialogue aimed at developing a rational solution to trade issues.
The President expressed confidence in reaching a compromise on the trade matter.
On July 8, U.S. President Donald Trump wrote a letter to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev indicating that the United States plans to levy a 25% tariff on Kazakh goods starting August 1, 2025.
“It is an honor for me to send this letter, as it demonstrates the strength of our trade relations and the fact that the United States is willing to continue working with Kazakhstan despite the significant trade deficit with your great country,” the letter stated.
Trump added that if, for any reason, Kazakhstan decides to introduce its tariffs, whatever level they set would be added to the American 25% duties.
