Dame Anna Wintour is reportedly stepping down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue after an impressive 37-year tenure.
The British-born fashion icon, aged 75, will relinquish the role she has held longer than any previous editor, while maintaining prominent positions within its publishing company.
Dame Anna will continue to serve as Vogue’s global editorial director, as well as chief content officer for Condé Nast, its parent company.
She was appointed a dame by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2017 for her contributions to fashion and journalism and was further honored as a Companion of Honour by King Charles earlier this year.
Dame Anna reportedly announced to staff on Thursday the introduction of a new role, head of editorial content, at American Vogue.
According to internal communications, Dame Anna expressed her desire to support “the next generation of impassioned editors storm the field with their own ideas” upon announcing her departure from the editor-in-chief position.
She affirmed her commitment to many ongoing responsibilities, stating, “it goes without saying that I plan to remain Vogue’s tennis and theatre editor in perpetuity.”
Raised in London, Dame Anna previously edited British Vogue before assuming leadership of its US counterpart in 1988.
She is credited with revitalizing American Vogue, transforming it into a leading global fashion publication. Her innovative approach included showcasing lesser-known models and combining affordable clothing with high fashion.
Throughout her extensive career, Dame Anna has solidified her status as one of the most recognizable and influential figures in the fashion industry.
Beyond her work with Vogue, she has also curated the Met Gala, a high-profile fundraising event in New York, since 1995.
Known for her signature bob and dark sunglasses, she described the shades as a “prop” in a BBC interview last December, adding, “they help me see and they help me not see.”
Dame Anna’s tenure at US Vogue is widely believed to have inspired the formidable Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada,” a novel penned by Lauren Weisberger, a former assistant of Wintour.
Earlier this year, King Charles reportedly inquired whether Dame Anna would consider retirement, to which she responded with a “firm no.”
