Stormzy found it challenging to separate himself from his role as a rapper in his debut leading film, Big Man.
Starring as Tenzman in the #MerkyFilm production—his first lead role—Stormzy reflected on the experience at the film’s premiere. He told BBC Newsbeat, “It was really tough, if I’m honest. It felt like I’m playing a rapper, but I *am* a rapper; it’s hard to fully separate.”
#MerkyFilm, an extension of Stormzy’s #MerkyBooks and #MerkyFC initiatives, aims to uplift Black British voices and talent.
“In every area we’ve ventured into,” he explained, “we’ve aimed to disrupt the status quo and do things differently.”
While filmmaking has long been a dream, Stormzy remained tight-lipped about the timing of his debut, stating simply, “I just know why it’s important.”
His film’s release coincides with the tenth anniversary of the actors’ boycott of the Oscars, sparked by concerns about diversity. Subsequent campaigns like #OscarsSoWhite have intensified calls for improved representation.
Stormzy emphasized #Merky’s commitment to authentic storytelling: “We want to represent our truth, tell our stories, but from a fresh perspective,” he said. “Even being Black British is nuanced—it’s the Black experience, the British experience, and the uniquely Black British experience. We want to convey this nuanced, brilliant, and diverse perspective, avoiding monolithic portrayals.”
Co-star Klevis Brahja, 15, shared his unexpected journey into acting, having been discovered on the street. “I never aspired to act, and suddenly I’m auditioning,” he said, adding, “It’s incredible to work alongside Stormzy and have this opportunity. Many dream of this; we’re incredibly fortunate.”
Big Man, shot entirely on a phone and directed by Oscar-winner Aneil Karia (The Long Goodbye, Surge), presented unique challenges. Stormzy embraced them: “It was tough, but an honor. I thrive on challenges and stepping outside my comfort zone.”
