Ex-Footballer Faces Assault Charge Involving Sugababes Singer

Former professional footballer Taiwo Leo Atieno, 39, appeared in court facing charges related to alleged assault and controlling behavior against his ex-girlfriend, Sugababes singer Keisha Buchanan.

The eight charges span approximately 13 years of the relationship. Atieno, who played for Luton Town and the Kenyan national team, appeared via video-link and was granted conditional bail.

He is accused of assault causing actual bodily harm between 2012 and 2015, and controlling or coercive behavior.

Allegations include controlling Ms. Buchanan’s finances, dictating when she could shower or go to the gym, restricting her lipstick choices, and opening her mail.

At Harrow Crown Court (sitting at Southwark), the judge imposed bail conditions prohibiting contact with Ms. Buchanan, entry into the Barnet district, and requiring passport surrender. Atieno will enter pleas in August.

Ms. Buchanan, a founding member of the Sugababes, achieved significant success with the group, known for their multiple number one singles and albums.

The original trio reunited in 2011 as Mutya Keisha Siobhán, later regaining the Sugababes name in 2019, under which they continue to perform.
