Uzbekistan: 256 Schoolchildren Caught Driving in a Single Day

In Samarkand, an 8th-grade student driving his own car to a school graduation ceremony attempted to evade traffic police. This was reported by the Road Safety Service.

According to the agency, the teenager attended school #37 in Samarkand. Measures have been taken against the minor’s father.

As of 2:00 PM on May 24th, a total of 256 instances of underage driving were recorded nationwide, including a 5th-grade student. Most incidents involved teenagers heading to graduation celebrations.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during a video conference on May 15th, noted a rise in regional instances, particularly in Namangan, of cars being rented to schoolchildren, resulting in 10-15 serious injuries and even fatalities monthly.

Consequently, he instructed the preparation of a bill to strengthen penalties for allowing minors to operate vehicles.
