AMAs 2023: Six Top Moments, From Jennifer Lopez’s Kiss to Billie Eilish’s Triumph

Billie Eilish, Beyoncé, Eminem, and Sir Rod Stewart were among the big winners at the fan-voted American Music Awards (AMAs).

The ceremony, held Monday in Las Vegas, was hosted by singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, whose presence significantly shaped the evening’s atmosphere.

The star-studded event also featured performances by Benson Boone, Gwen Stefani, and award recipient Janet Jackson.

Here are some key highlights from the ceremony:

Billie Eilish achieved a remarkable sweep, winning seven awards, including Artist and Album of the Year for *Hit Me Hard and Soft*, and Song of the Year for “Birds of a Feather.” She also won Favorite Touring Artist but was absent, due to her European tour.

Eminem received awards for Favorite Male Hip-Hop Artist and Hip-Hop Album for *The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)*, but was not present to accept them. Similarly, Beyoncé, winner of Favorite Country Album for *Cowboy Carter*, was absent.

With many notable artists absent, the spotlight fell largely on host Jennifer Lopez. The 55-year-old entertainer delivered a dynamic medley of hits, including Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” and Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” featuring passionate embraces with both male and female dancers, eliciting mixed reactions on social media, ranging from amusement to criticism.

Sir Rod Stewart received a heartwarming surprise when he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by his five children. Visibly moved, the 80-year-old singer expressed his gratitude, highlighting his lifelong passion for music and thanking his past and present bandmates.

He followed with a performance of his classic hit “Forever Young.”

Another memorable moment was Shaboozey’s amused reaction to Megan Moroney’s assertion that the Carter Family “basically invented country music” during an award presentation. The moment, captured on camera, quickly went viral, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter.

Janet Jackson, recipient of the Icon Award, delivered a captivating performance of hits including “Someone to Call My Lover” and “All for You,” humbly acknowledging her success as the result of hard work and dedication.

Performing his hit “Mystical Magical,” the acrobatic pop star displayed his dynamic stage presence, showcasing a vibrant wardrobe change from a green suit to a floral purple ensemble.

Other noteworthy performances included Gloria Estefan’s vibrant Conga tribute to Latin music and Gwen Stefani’s celebration of her 2000s hits. Additional winners included SZA, Post Malone, Gracie Abrams, Becky G, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, and Bruno Mars.
