Maddison pledges unwavering support for Postecoglou as Spurs look to revive their season

James Maddison has reaffirmed that Tottenham Hotspur’s squad is “100%” behind manager Ange Postecoglou and remains optimistic about achieving “something very special” this season.

Tottenham currently sit 16th in the Premier League after a challenging league campaign, with pressure increasing on Postecoglou despite the team’s strong performances in European competition.

The North London side, without a major trophy since 2007, welcome Norway’s Bodo/Glimt to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first leg of the Europa League semi-final on Thursday.

Attacking midfielder Maddison, 28, conceded that the club’s domestic form has been disappointing but dismissed speculation around the manager as “unhealthy”.

“We are behind the manager 100%,” Maddison stated. “He’s a fantastic manager, and although we’ve had a difficult league season, we’ve excelled in Europe. The league campaign hasn’t met expectations, but we believe in his leadership.

“He’s my manager, my gaffer, and I have immense respect for him. The narrative suggesting his position is under threat is something the squad is actively ignoring because it’s not helpful,” he said.

“Every day I see the players taking on his instructions, fully committed to delivering for this club. We remain in a strong position in Europe and are determined to make the most of this opportunity under his guidance.

“I will continue to give my all for him as long as he’s at the club.”

Tottenham, who must contend with the absence of captain Son Heung-min due to a foot injury, are set to face Bodo/Glimt and Maddison insists the squad is eager to “embrace the challenge” of reaching their first European final since the 2019 Champions League defeat to Liverpool.

“It’s a huge occasion,” Maddison added.

“For most players, opportunities to play in European semi-finals come rarely—maybe once or twice in a career if you’re fortunate.

“We need to seize this moment. We’re among the last four in a prestigious European competition and must use that as motivation, both on Thursday and in the return leg in Bodo.

“This is a unique opportunity. There’s been a lot of discussion about our form and league struggles, but we have the chance to achieve something memorable.

“We’ve earned our place, we deserve it, and we’re excited for the challenge.”

Ange Postecoglou brought James Maddison to Tottenham from Leicester City in June 2023.

Bodo/Glimt advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Lazio on penalties in the previous round, and Postecoglou has downplayed the notion that Spurs are clear favourites.

“Bodo/Glimt are here on merit,” the Australian said.

“They’re a quality footballing side, regardless of their origin. Coming from Australia, where football isn’t the top sport, I know never to underestimate anyone.

“It’s irrelevant whether we are considered a bigger club; both sides have reached the semi-final stage, and Bodo/Glimt have fully earned their place.

“They’ve performed superbly to reach this level, and we will approach them with the respect they deserve, while striving to deliver our best display.”

The 59-year-old also commented that Tottenham’s European progress is being overshadowed by discussion about their league standing.

He said: “I’m very conscious of the dual narratives we’re navigating. There seems to be an effort by some to diminish our achievements in Europe, perhaps unsurprisingly given the club’s public perception.

“I’ve seen comparisons made between our European run and Manchester United’s FA Cup pursuit, but it’s not equivalent by any measure. Such comparisons undermine our credentials and the legitimacy of our Champions League ambitions.

“There are those attempting to play down the significance of what lies ahead—a truly remarkable opportunity. Whatever the outcome in the league, generations of supporters cherish the prospect of witnessing success, sharing unforgettable moments with their loved ones.

“Even if we excelled domestically, it wouldn’t heighten the importance of this opportunity. The magnitude is the same, and I have made sure the players recognise that.”
