Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Italian Open Amid Struggles with Form

Novak Djokovic has not captured a major championship since claiming Olympic gold in Paris.

Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from next week’s Italian Open, marking a further setback for the 24-time Grand Slam champion’s preparations ahead of Roland Garros.

The Serbian star has participated in Rome every year since 2007, winning the tournament on six occasions, with his most recent triumph in 2022.

However, tournament organisers confirmed on social media, external that Djokovic will not compete in 2025, although no specific reason was given for his absence.

This announcement follows Djokovic’s early exit at the Madrid Open last week, extending a challenging start to the season for the 37-year-old.

One win away from reaching his 100th ATP title, Djokovic has yet to secure a major victory in 2024, with his last triumph dating back to the Paris Olympics.

The world number five has recently suffered early exits at clay court events in Monte Carlo and Madrid.

Following his defeat to Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in Spain, Djokovic hinted that it might have been his final appearance at the Madrid Open.

“It’s a bit of a new reality for me, I must admit, just trying to win a match or two without focusing on a deep run in the tournament,” Djokovic reflected after his Madrid loss.

His decision to withdraw from Rome suggests he may not play another official match prior to the start of the French Open on May 26.

Djokovic is a three-time champion at Roland Garros.
