Manchester City’s Promising Future Hinges on Shaw’s Pivotal Role

Khadija Shaw tallied 21 goals in 22 WSL appearances for Manchester City this season.

Manchester City’s domestic double signifies the commencement of what they aspire to be a highly prosperous era for the club, with Khadija Shaw playing a pivotal role.

Shaw’s future had been the subject of considerable speculation, with indications pointing towards a departure from City.

However, on Monday, in front of 19,000 supporters at the club’s celebratory parade, the 29-year-old announced a surprising reversal, confirming her decision to sign a new four-year contract.

The announcement elicited jubilant reactions from fans at the Co-op Live arena, and jerseys emblazoned with her name were prevalent along Wembley Way prior to Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup final.

She validated her status as the club’s most critical piece of business this summer by scoring the opening goal in their 4-0 victory over Brighton, subsequently providing an assist for Aoba Fujino, who scored City’s third goal.

Their FA Cup triumph – their first since 2020 – occurred three weeks after City ended rivals Chelsea’s six-year dominance of the Women’s Super League title.

This served as further evidence of their ambition for sustained success, a sentiment echoed by manager Andree Jeglertz post-match. Shaw is indispensable to achieving this goal.

“Firstly, it is fantastic that she believes our program is the optimal path for her development as a football player and that this is the ideal environment to secure titles,” Jeglertz stated.

“We appreciate her decision, and considerable credit is due to those who facilitated this outcome.”

“We have Bunny Shaw in our team, and we employ a specific approach to maximize her potential, positioning her in these [goalscoring] opportunities.”

“She is staying, and we intend to continue collaborating with her in this manner.”

Khadija Shaw’s five FA Cup goals this season placed her as joint top scorer alongside Chelsea’s Sam Kerr.

Shaw acknowledged feeling “a bit nervous” about announcing her new deal following the victory at Wembley.

Fans had experienced an emotional rollercoaster regarding her potential departure, with Chelsea reportedly poised to capitalize.

However, after a protracted season in which Shaw garnered numerous individual accolades, including the WSL Player of the Year and Golden Boot awards, she expressed delight in securing another piece of silverware.

“Securing the double is a fantastic feeling,” Shaw remarked. “I’ve always maintained that Manchester is my home. It took some time, but we ultimately finalized [the contract agreement].”

At Wembley, her opening goal proved crucial, coming after Brighton had dominated the first 30 minutes, with City struggling to establish a foothold.

A pivotal moment occurred when a cross found Shaw in the 38th minute, with the Jamaican striker rising highest to loop a header past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

This effectively stifled Brighton’s momentum, and captain Alex Greenwood’s goal just before halftime provided City with a commanding lead.

Jeglertz concurred that Shaw’s goal provided his side with “relief,” and her assist for Fujino in the second half effectively secured City’s victory. A final goal from substitute Vivianne Miedema cemented their win.

Despite the speculation of the past month, Shaw has remained their standout performer. She was instrumental in the final, proved to be the matchwinner in the semi-finals, and concluded the WSL season with a brace on the final day, reaching a total of 21 goals in 22 matches.

“I am highly impressed with how she managed that [speculation],” Jeglertz stated. “She never exhibited any mood that negatively impacted her performance.”

“Of course, she was aware of the reports. However, she remained exceptionally professional, consistently performed, and maintained her status as a commendable individual.”

The challenge now for City is to capitalize on their robust foundations and consistently secure silverware.

“Winning the WSL was significant for the club, but it was equally important to win another title just a few weeks later,” Jeglertz stated.

“We aspire to maintain this hunger and dedication to strive for more and avoid complacency. It is crucial that we do not take anything for granted and continue to progress to the next level.”

City have dominated domestically this year, but have done so without the added demands of Champions League football.

Their squad depth, which has improved over recent seasons, features depth and youthful talent, but is yet to be fully tested.

Former City striker Ellen White believes the club needs to be proactive in order to build the dynasty they crave.

“Manchester City aspire to be dominant on all fronts, so they must continue to evolve and acquire more players,” White told TNT Sports. “They have experienced [success] now and will want to return here next season.”

“It has been a long wait for them to win this, their 10th trophy since turning professional in 2014. That is no small feat. But they need to continue evolving, progressing, and establishing consistency.”

Ex-England forward Sue Smith echoed that sentiment, stating that next season presents a “different test” for Jeglertz and his squad.

“They have been able to focus domestically, but now they must balance European football and effectively utilize the squad. They will have to adapt,” Smith told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“That is where they aspire to be – testing themselves against the best teams.”
