Ligue 1 Match Abandoned as Nantes Fans Invade Pitch After Relegation

Anti-riot police officers secure the pitch after Nantes’ supporters threw smoke flares and invaded it

A Ligue 1 match between Nantes and Toulouse was abandoned after just 22 minutes due to a pitch invasion by hooded ultras wielding flares.

The disruption appeared to be a protest against Nantes’ potential relegation, stemming from a season marked by only five league victories in 33 games.

Supporters ignited flares before breaching barriers and storming the field at the Stade de la Beaujoire, with the score at 0-0, overwhelming stadium security.

Players retreated to the tunnel as law enforcement entered the pitch to subdue the demonstration, eventually pushing the fans back.

Referee Stephanie Frappart officially called off the match nearly 40 minutes after the initial suspension of play due to the unrest.

“The decision to permanently stop the match has been made for security reasons,” Frappart stated, citing safety concerns.

Sunday’s game marked the season finale for both clubs and was intended as Vahid Halilhodzic’s final appearance as Nantes’ manager.

“The Yellow and Greens aimed to conclude the season with a victory at the Beaujoire stadium tonight, in coach Vahid’s last match and for pride, against Toulouse FC,” Nantes conveyed in a statement.

“However, following the use of pyrotechnics in the stands and a pitch invasion in the 22nd minute (0-0), the authorities and the refereeing team decided to abandon the match.”

France’s Minister of Sports, Marina Ferrari, condemned the incident on X, labeling it “unacceptable.”

“I condemn these actions with the utmost firmness and offer my support to the players as well as to the fans who came to experience this moment peacefully.

“The definitive interruption of this match, decided by the prefect, was necessary. Such incidents cannot be tolerated.

“I wish to commend the swift intervention of the stadium staff and law enforcement. Everyone must take responsibility to ensure the identification of those responsible for these acts of violence, who must be sanctioned with the utmost severity.”
