Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace have all secured berths in European finals this season.
In a historic first, English teams have qualified for the finals of three distinct European competitions in the same campaign.
Following Arsenal’s confirmation of their Champions League final spot with a 2-1 aggregate triumph over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace replicated the feat in their respective tournaments later in the week.
Unai Emery’s Villa overturned a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, comprehensively defeating Forest 4-1 on aggregate on Thursday, setting up a Europa League final clash with Bundesliga’s Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20.
Simultaneously, Crystal Palace, building on their 3-1 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk a week prior, secured a 2-1 win against the Ukrainian side at Selhurst Park in the second leg.
They are now set to face Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final on May 28.
The Conference League, introduced five years ago, stands as European football’s third-tier competition, following the dissolution of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1999.
How Villa could get sixth into the Champions League
This near-sweep of finals was almost realized last season when Chelsea clinched the Conference League title, and Tottenham triumphed over Manchester United in the Europa League final.
However, Arsenal, the last English representative in the Champions League, were bested by eventual champions Paris St-Germain in the semi-finals.
The Premier League has previously witnessed at least three teams reaching the finals of the Champions League and Europa League.
In 2021, Kai Havertz’s solitary goal secured Chelsea’s victory over Manchester City in an all-Premier League Champions League final, while Manchester United fell short in the Europa League final.
Similarly, in 2019, Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in the same week that Chelsea overcame Arsenal in the Europa League final in Baku.
Conversely, in 2006, English teams suffered defeats in both finals, with Arsenal losing to Barcelona in the Champions League and Middlesbrough enduring a 4-0 defeat against Sevilla in the Uefa Cup.
Prior to that, one must rewind more than two decades to find the last season where English clubs emerged victorious in two of the three available competitions.
In 1984, Liverpool clinched their fourth European Cup title by defeating Roma, and Spurs secured their second Uefa Cup triumph against Anderlecht.
Liverpool also lifted the European Cup in 1981 with a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in Paris, while Bobby Robson’s Ipswich Town triumphed over AZ Alkmaar in the Uefa Cup final that same year.
AC Milan won back-to-back European Cups
Italy has seen representatives in all available finals on several occasions, most recently in 2023, although their clubs were unsuccessful in all three finals: Inter in the Champions League, Roma in the Europa League, and Fiorentina in the Conference League.
Serie A clubs won two out of three finals in 1993-94, with AC Milan securing the Champions League and Inter claiming the Uefa Cup, while Parma lost to Arsenal in the Cup Winners’ Cup.
They also won two out of three and lost the other in 1992-93 and 1988-89.
In 1989-90, during a golden era for Italian football, Serie A clubs dominated, winning all three competitions as Milan were crowned European champions, Juventus defeated Fiorentina to win the Uefa Cup, and Sampdoria secured the Cup Winners’ Cup.
Spanish clubs reached three finals in 1985-86, with Real Madrid winning the Uefa Cup, Barcelona finishing as runners-up in the European Cup, and Atletico ending as runners-up in the Cup Winners’ Cup.
