Southampton Stun Arsenal, Advancing to FA Cup Semi-Finals
“Enjoy your quadruple, pal.”
That was the pointed response from Southampton’s official X account to an Arsenal supporter who criticized the Saints’ celebratory post following their unexpected FA Cup victory.
A mere two weeks prior, discussions centered on the Gunners’ potential for an unprecedented quadruple trophy haul. However, defeats to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, compounded by this FA Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Southampton, have significantly dampened those aspirations.
Shea Charles’ 85th-minute goal secured the win, eliminating Arsenal from the competition. Viktor Gyokeres’ earlier equalizer had followed Ross Stewart’s initial goal in the first half.
This marks Arsenal’s first consecutive defeats of the season, and only their fifth loss overall this campaign.
Attention will now turn to Arsenal’s ability to manage external pressures and navigate the challenges ahead, with the Premier League and Champions League still within reach.
Arsenal’s Premier League title drought extends back 22 years, with three consecutive second-place finishes adding to the frustration.
The Carabao Cup final represented Arsenal’s first opportunity in six years to secure a major trophy.
Following the loss to Manchester City and now, an FA Cup exit to a lower-league team for the first time since 2021-22 (a third-round defeat to Nottingham Forest), Arsenal must ensure these setbacks do not trigger a decline in form.
“They have to not let the season run away from them,” former Arsenal and Southampton forward Theo Walcott commented to BBC Sport.
“Everything they have built this season, don’t let it affect them. They have been in this situation before and they don’t want to relive that.”
Mikel Arteta has consistently emphasized the club’s collective ambition to win, but with the season nearing its conclusion, games dwindling, and a £250 million summer investment, the stakes are exceptionally high.
Walcott noted a “nervous energy” emanating from the touchline at St Mary’s, reminiscent of previous years.
“Visually watching Mikel on the sidelines, it was elements of previous years where that energy reflected into the team,” he observed.
“It was very tense. Not just Mikel but a lot of the staff were out there at times. It was like too many cooks in the kitchen, too many messages.”
The match saw Arsenal deliver a performance below their usual high standards.
Despite dominating possession, registering 23 shots, and achieving a 68th-minute equalizer, the Gunners never appeared poised to secure a victory.
“I love my players. What they have done for nine months. I’m not going to criticize them because we lost a game here in the manner that they tried,” Arteta stated.
“And the way they are putting their bodies through everything. Some of them probably didn’t even have to be here. I’m not going to do that. I’m going to defend them more than ever.
“Someone has to take responsibility. That’s me and we have the most beautiful period of the season ahead of us.
“In the season, you always have moments. Normally two or three. This is the first moment that we have.
“So stand up, make yourself comfortable and deliver like we’ve been doing all season.”
The Arsenal manager was then asked how he intends to prevent this dip in form from impacting their Champions League and Premier League campaigns.
“Giving them [the players] clarity, giving more conviction, trusting our players, believing in what we are doing,” Arteta responded.
“And continue to do that with the tweaks that every game demands.
“But especially maintaining the speed, the attitude and the energy at the highest possible level. Because that’s critical to perform at the level that we need to win matches.”

BBC Pundits Offer Reaction to Arsenal’s “Disappointing” Performance
Arteta’s starting lineup against Southampton featured seven changes from the team that faced Manchester City at Wembley two weeks prior.
These changes were not solely due to rotation, but also a consequence of injuries affecting the squad.
Leading up to the international break, 11 Arsenal players withdrew from their respective national teams.
This led to speculation that Arteta pressured players to withdraw, but the team selection for the Southampton match suggests otherwise.
Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Leandro Trossard – all of whom had withdrawn from international duty – were absent from the squad, while William Saliba was named as a substitute.
Captain Martin Odegaard made his first start since January, and Kai Havertz was substituted off while Arsenal were chasing a winning goal.
Adding to Arteta’s concerns, Gabriel Magalhaes was forced off with a knee injury.
However, Christian Norgaard, who has had limited playing time this season but started the match, dismissed the notion that an unfamiliar lineup contributed to the defeat.
“No, there are no excuses. It has nothing to do with injuries or availability,” Norgaard asserted.
“We had a really good team on the pitch that should have been competing on a high level. We need to pick ourselves up. We have two big competitions left to compete in.”
Despite an error in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, Arteta continued with cup goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, opting against David Raya.
“I don’t think it was anything to do with Kepa in terms of them losing, but you have to play your best team,” former England defender Micah Richards told BBC Sport.
Walcott added: “Playing your best team was the right thing to do.
“It’s easy if I say that now, but you want a reaction off the cup final and it wasn’t that – it was worse.”

Arteta Responds to Arsenal’s Defeat Against Southampton
Manchester City have consistently challenged Arsenal’s pursuit of silverware.
In two of Arsenal’s three second-place Premier League finishes, they have trailed Pep Guardiola’s side.
City’s victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final, achieved through one of their strongest performances of the season, appears to have energized them.
Their subsequent 4-1 FA Cup win against Liverpool earlier in the day, securing a semi-final berth, further emphasizes their momentum. Arsenal are scheduled to face City at the Etihad Stadium in April, a match likely to significantly influence this season’s title race.
“It was only a couple of weeks ago people were saying Arsenal could do the quadruple, Now they are in two competitions,” Richards noted.
“Man City, after what they did earlier on, look like they are going to push them all the way for the league.
“The most disappointing thing for me was watching Arsenal and their attitude. They have been excellent defensively, in transitions they have been very good, the shape has been good and the effort has been as good as anyone.
“For them to turn up the way they did, I thought was very poor.”
Arsenal will be hoping that this setback is merely a temporary blip in what can still be a successful season – however, the Gunners must swiftly regain their best form.
