TikTok Issues Apology Following Widespread User Reports of Platform Outages in the US

The new US ownership of TikTok has issued an apology to users following widespread reports of service disruptions affecting the video-sharing platform.

Downdetector, a platform monitoring service outages, registered over 600,000 reports of glitches from TikTok users in the United States over the past weekend.

Users reported issues such as repetitive video displays on “For You” feeds, content failing to load, and new posts receiving “zero views,” with some users continuing to experience these problems into Monday.

TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, the entity now managing the platform’s operations in the US, stated that it is “working to restore our services following a power outage at a US data center impacting TikTok and other apps we operate”.

“We’re working with our data center partner to stabilize our service,” the company added in a statement on X.

“We’re sorry for this disruption and hope to resolve it soon.”

Oracle, TikTok’s US data center partner, has not commented on the outage.

The cloud computing firm has assumed a more significant role in TikTok’s US operations under an agreement that secures the app’s future in the country, finalized on Thursday.

The disruptions have sparked speculation and concerns that the glitches may be related to the change in ownership or anticipated modifications to the US app’s algorithm.

US TikTok users began reporting issues with their feeds and content on Sunday.

Downdetector informed the BBC that it received 663,061 reports from US users between Saturday evening and Monday, with some describing a “total outage” across the platform.

Reported issues appeared to subside overnight on Sunday before increasing again on Monday as some US TikTok users encountered persistent problems.

CapCut, a video editing application also owned by TikTok, also experienced a surge in problem reports from users on Downdetector.

Users of the video-sharing app in the US turned to other social media platforms to discuss the issues.

“Okay so is anyone else’s TikTok being extremely slow, keeps showing you old videos, doesn’t show you what you what you actually search, and doesn’t load certain stuff….,” one X user inquired on Sunday.

According to posts viewed by BBC News on X, some TikTok users stated that they could not access creator tools on the app, including those showing their share of advertising revenue paid by TikTok to creators of popular content.

Others mentioned that videos they uploaded to the platform did not receive the expected visibility or were “stuck at zero views.”

As part of an agreement brokered by former President Donald Trump to allow TikTok to continue operating in the US, Oracle will review and refine a separate version of its algorithm for American users.

The cloud giant is one of three managing investors in TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, holding a 15% stake in the spun-off US entity.

Oracle is also responsible for securing US user data, a role it was already partially fulfilling under a pre-existing security arrangement known as Project Texas.

The singer hit out at Dr Zayn Khalid Majeed – who says he will try to have a positive impact with his content.

So-called manfluencers wearing smart glasses approach women and then post videos to TikTok and Instagram.

Details on the expanded access to location information was published in a new privacy policy for the popular social media app.

While TikTok’s future in the US has been secured, questions remain about exactly what changes US users will see.

It is a challenge for TikTok’s parent company ByteDance as well as global ambitions for other Chinese tech companies.
