X to Restrict AI Tool Grok’s Image Manipulation Capabilities Following User Concerns

Following widespread concern in countries including the UK and US regarding the creation of sexualized AI deepfakes, Elon Musk’s AI model, Grok, will no longer permit the editing of photos of real individuals to depict them in revealing attire.

“We have implemented technological measures to prevent the Grok account from allowing the editing of images of real people in revealing clothing such as bikinis.”

“This restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers,” according to an announcement on X, the platform that hosts the Grok AI tool.

The announcement arrives shortly after California’s Attorney General disclosed that the state is investigating the proliferation of sexualized AI deepfakes, including those involving children, generated by the AI model.

In a statement released Wednesday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated: “This material, which depicts women and children in nude and sexually explicit situations, has been used to harass people across the internet.”

Malaysia and Indonesia have blocked access to the chatbot due to the images, and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has cautioned that X could forfeit the “right to self regulate” amid growing condemnation of the AI-generated images.
