Each week throughout the Premier League season, BBC football analyst Troy Deeney will present his selections for team and manager of the week.
Here are Deeney’s picks for this week. Do you concur? Share your opinions in the comments section at the bottom of this page.
Gianluigi Donnarumma (Manchester City): Despite the 3-0 scoreline against West Ham, Donnarumma made four or five crucial saves early in the second half. These stops maintained their lead and ultimately contributed to their victory. Manchester City‘s defense, while solid, hasn’t been exceptional. Donnarumma needs to continue delivering these impactful performances.
Reece James (Chelsea): James has featured in this selection previously, and he appears to be in top form ahead of the World Cup. His talent has never been in doubt, but his availability has been a concern. He’s currently enjoying a year without injury, and hopefully, that continues. His free-kick in the draw at Newcastle was exceptional.
Piero Hincapie (Arsenal): Hincapie has been quietly impressive for Arsenal. Acquired relatively late when other clubs were also interested, he has consistently performed well, delivering a solid performance against Everton.
Joachim Andersen (Fulham): Andersen has consistently brought class to Fulham. His excellent diagonal passing and organizational skills are invaluable to the team. He expertly organizes and marshals the defense, as he did again against Forest. He is a very astute player.
Antonee Robinson (Fulham): It’s great to see Robinson back on the pitch. With the World Cup approaching, this is a crucial season for him, and he is a vital player for the United States. After some injury setbacks, he is beginning to regain his best form.
Keane Lewis-Potter (Brentford): Previously utilized at full-back, Lewis-Potter is now playing in his preferred attacking position. He scored two fantastic goals in a critical match for Brentford at Wolves, securing a win that likely ensures their Premier League survival.
Ethan Ampadu (Leeds): I am a big admirer of Ampadu. Since leaving Chelsea, he has not only developed as a player but also as a person and a leader. He consistently delivers big tackles and crucial moments, and he scored a goal in the victory against Palace.
Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa): Rogers is the man of the moment, scoring two more goals – both excellent finishes against Manchester United. Could Rogers lead England’s attack? How do you leave out players like Bellingham, Foden, or Palmer? His current form warrants serious consideration. He now has seven goals for Villa and is playing exceptionally well.
Nick Woltemade (Newcastle): Woltemade scored two goals and arguably should have had a hat-trick against Chelsea this weekend. The return of Yoane Wissa seems to have reignited his spark, bringing back his competitive edge. He is scoring and positioning himself well. He had a slight dip in form a few weeks ago, possibly due to complacency.
Erling Haaland (Manchester City): Haaland is simply dominant. He scored two goals, but could have had four if I’m being critical. He’s a machine. His next goal will be his 150th in all competitions for Manchester City in just three and a half years. Let that sink in. It’s astonishing. He would be in my team every week.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds): There’s speculation about a potential late push for England’s summer squad. However, considering his injury history, it might be a significant challenge. For now, let’s appreciate his return, fitness, and goal-scoring ability when he’s fit and playing. That’s what truly matters.
Daniel Farke (Leeds United): A brilliant victory against Crystal Palace. Just two weeks ago, Palace were being considered as potential top-four contenders, and Farke was under considerable pressure. Now, Leeds are arguably favored to avoid relegation from their current position. They have given themselves a strong chance, making this result the standout of the weekend.
