The Implications of Scrapping the Two-Child Benefit Cap

The abolition of the two-child benefit cap is on the horizon – but what implications will this have for families in the South of England?

Emily Hudson, Politics South reporter, has been examining the proposed policy change, which is projected to incur annual costs of £3 billion by 2029-30.

The measure was unveiled during the Autumn Budget by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who argued that the existing cap “pushes children into poverty more than any other factor.”

Implemented by the Conservative government in 2017, the cap restricted Universal Credit or tax credit claims to the first two children in a family.

Conservative representatives have voiced criticism of the impending change, contending that individuals receiving benefits should be subject to the same financial considerations regarding family size as the wider population.
