Doherty: Newbridge Anticipate Semifinal Clash with Scotstown
Following Newbridge’s six-point victory over Madden in Armagh, Conor Doherty stated that his team has been focused on making a deep run in Ulster this year.
After an early exit against Clann Eireann, representatives of Orchard County, in the previous year, the Derry champions, buoyed by their retention of the county title, are setting their sights higher for 2025.
Newbridge initiated their campaign with a preliminary round victory over Dunloy the previous weekend, sustaining that momentum into Sunday’s match at the Athletic Grounds.
Acknowledging the escalating challenges ahead, Doherty expressed his anticipation for the upcoming semifinal contest against Scotstown, scheduled for the weekend of November 22/23.
“Had we been told this at the start of the year, we would have jumped at the opportunity,” he told BBC Sport NI.
“This is a competition we are highly motivated for, and we are delighted to continue progressing.”
“Last year was uncharted territory for us, and our performance took many by surprise. However, I believe we set our sights on this prize earlier this year after the celebrations.”
“The game against Dunloy proved beneficial, helping us shake off any rust. That was another test, and we anticipate Scotstown will present an even greater challenge.”
Despite maintaining a lead throughout Sunday’s match, Doherty acknowledged imperfections in their performance, foreseeing scrutiny for missed opportunities and excessive ball carrying.
He emphasized the need for improvement to sustain their campaign, adding that Newbridge will “relish” the upcoming challenge.
“I carelessly turned the ball over a few times, an area we must address going forward,” he stated.
“Kilcoo, Scotstown, and Erne Gaels remain in the competition, and they are meticulous with possession. We may not be able to afford such mistakes in the next match.”
“Overall, it was a controlled performance, and it’s advantageous to enter the next round with areas for improvement.”
“It’s going to be a completely different challenge, but we will relish it. We have formidable teams in Derry like Glen and Slaughtneil, so we will approach the game with confidence while recognizing the seriousness of the Scotstown team.”
