Liberal Democrat MPs were present in significant numbers to oppose Nigel Farage’s ten-minute rule motion concerning the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
Mr. Farage stated to fellow MPs, “Our sovereignty remains incomplete while we are party to the ECHR, the Council of Europe, and its associated court. The matter is quite clear.”
Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, voiced his opposition to the Reform UK leader’s proposal, asserting that the convention “safeguards our freedom of speech.”
A ten-minute rule motion provides an opportunity for a backbench MP to advocate for a prospective law within a speech limited to ten minutes.
The motion put forth by the Reform UK leader was defeated by a vote of 154 to 96.
