Bird Flu Outbreak Detected at Commercial Poultry Farm

A protection zone has been established following the confirmation of avian influenza at a commercial poultry establishment.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has reported that the H5N1 strain was identified at a site near Lakenheath, Suffolk, on Sunday. Authorities have mandated the culling of all birds on the premises.

A 3km (1.9 mile) protection zone and a 10km (6.2 mile) surveillance zone have been implemented surrounding the affected location and will remain in effect until further notice.

This marks the first confirmed case in the East of England since the outbreak near Attleborough, Norfolk, in August.

The disease, caused by a virus, primarily affects birds but can occasionally spread to other animals, including foxes, seals, and otters.

Defra has stated that the risk to the general public remains very low. However, individuals are advised to avoid contact with or handling of any deceased or visibly ill wild birds.
