Sinner Victorious in Basel Amidst String of Retirements

Jannik Sinner reached all four Grand Slam singles finals in 2025

Jannik Sinner has advanced to the semi-finals of the Vienna Open, showcasing a dominant performance with a straight-sets victory over Alexander Bublik.

The Italian world number two secured his advancement with a single service break in each set, maintaining his bid for a fourth title this year.

Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam champion who conceded only five points on his serve throughout the match, is now set to face Australia’s Alex de Minaur for a coveted spot in the final.

The 24-year-old, who was recently overtaken by Carlos Alcaraz as the top-ranked men’s player following a defeat in the US Open final, has an impressive record of 60 wins in his last 66 matches.

While world number 16 Bublik had previously defeated Sinner in Halle back in June, he proved to be no match for the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion on Friday.

Sinner maintained unwavering control of his service games, never allowing Bublik more than a single point. He simultaneously applied consistent pressure and capitalized on two of his eight break point opportunities.

Sinner boasts a 19-match winning streak on indoor hard courts, along with a seven-match winning streak in Vienna, where he previously claimed the title in his last appearance in 2023.

Semi-final opponent De Minaur secured his place by defeating Italian Matteo Berrettini with a score of 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

That victory marked his 53rd win of the season – a figure surpassed only by world number one Alcaraz on the ATP Tour in 2025.

Germany’s Alexander Zverev, ranked third in the world, also advanced to the final four in Vienna after Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands withdrew from their quarter-final match.

As a result, Zverev, the second seed in Vienna, joins Alcaraz, Sinner, and Novak Djokovic as the first four players to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in November.

Zverev’s semi-final opponent on Saturday will be either Italian fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti or Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

Meanwhile, at the Swiss Indoors, three of the four quarter-final matches scheduled for Friday ended in walkovers.

Norway’s Casper Ruud retired after losing the first-set tie-break against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, while Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime retired after Spain’s Jaume Munar won the first set 6-3.

Canadian Denis Shapovalov conceded his match to Joao Fonseca after falling behind 3-6, 6-3, 4-1 against the Brazilian.

In the only quarter-final completed in Basel, Frenchman Ugo Humbert defeated American Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7-0), 6-4.

The season has seen several high-profile players’ seasons end prematurely in recent weeks.

Following a serious injury to Holger Rune, British number one Jack Draper called for adjustments to the tennis calendar to ensure “some sort of longevity” for players earlier in October.

Former women’s world number one Iga Swiatek voiced concerns in September that the season is “too long and too intense” amidst a spate of injuries at the China Open.
