Pre-Owned School Uniforms See Increased Demand

Charities and community organizations are reporting an increasing demand for pre-owned school uniforms.

Barnardo’s in Frome has issued a public appeal for uniform donations due to the significant surge in requests. Parents in Somerset have also established Facebook groups to facilitate uniform exchanges.

The Community Hub in Chard has launched a “pay-what-you-can” pre-loved school uniform shop, designed to alleviate financial pressures on parents.

Tessa Goodridge-Reynolds, representing the Chard Community Hub, stated, “Our pay-as-you-can model removes any financial obligation. We aim to ease the burden on parents during this expensive period.”

Ms. Goodridge-Reynolds spearheaded the creation of the uniform shop in 2022, responding to a demonstrated community need.

“Families were finding it challenging to acquire uniforms affordably,” she explained.

“Moreover, this initiative promotes sustainability. Maximizing the lifespan of clothing through swapping and sharing offers considerable environmental benefits.”

“To date, over 1,300 items have been distributed to families. This is a particularly busy time as everyone prepares for the start of the school week.”

Nikki Allen, a Somerset resident and parent, founded the South Somerset School Uniform Exchange group on Facebook.

“I initiated the group several years ago when my son was still in school and I was seeking affordable uniform options,” Ms. Allen noted.

“The group features daily posts concerning school uniforms and outerwear. Members are appreciative of the opportunity to acquire items at reduced costs, especially given current budgetary constraints.”

Barnardo’s in Frome has corroborated the increasing demand for school uniforms.

While the organization has been recycling uniforms for four years, present demand is unprecedented, with parents queuing to obtain uniforms and physical education attire for their children.

Hannah Smith, the store manager, reported, “We’ve experienced a substantial increase in demand. I’ve received numerous inquiries and requests for uniforms.”

“This trend is undoubtedly linked to the cost of living crisis. Families can no longer afford to purchase new uniforms and are facing financial hardships.”

“A standard Frome college uniform can easily cost £100 for a single set.”
