Donald Trump maintains a notable relationship with FIFA and notably presented the Club World Cup trophy to Chelsea during the summer.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the draw for the 2026 men’s World Cup will be held in Washington this December.
The tournament, set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature an expanded field of 48 nations, up from the previous 32.
While Las Vegas had been anticipated as the host city, reminiscent of its role during the 1994 tournament hosted by the U.S., the draw is now scheduled to occur on December 5 at the Kennedy Center, the performing arts venue where Trump serves as chairman.
“It’s the biggest, probably the biggest event in sports,” Trump stated.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who brought the World Cup trophy, also participated in the draw announcement from the Oval Office at the White House.
“The draw will be broadcast live worldwide and viewed by an estimated one billion people,” Infantino remarked.
“It will feature 48 participating teams and a total of 104 matches – 104 Super Bowls!”
Infantino extended the opportunity for Trump to hold the trophy during the Friday news conference, prompting Trump to inquire, “Can I keep it?”
