Former UFC champion Sean Strickland has received a six-month suspension from competitive fighting following his involvement in an altercation at a mixed martial arts event in Las Vegas on June 29.
Strickland, 34, was present as a cornerman for Miles Hunsinger at a Tuff-N-Uff event when he reportedly engaged in a physical confrontation with another fighter after a match.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has stipulated that the suspension could be reduced to four-and-a-half months should Strickland complete an anger management program.
In addition to the suspension, the American fighter was fined £3,730 ($5,000) and is responsible for covering legal fees.
Strickland’s reaction was reportedly triggered by Luis Hernandez’s taunting of Husinger following their middleweight bout.
Fellow UFC competitor Chris Curtis was also implicated in the fracas, with footage appearing to show Strickland throwing punches at Hernandez.
NSAC chairman Dallas Haun acknowledged that Strickland’s prompt apology “made this process easy”.
Haun stated: “He apologised for his behaviour.
“We appreciate someone stepping up, owning something and then a resolution could be come to quickly and with all parties in agreement.”
Curtis received a fine of £1,860 for his part in the incident, but avoided suspension.
The suspension is set to end on December 29, unless the aforementioned conditions for reduction are met.
Strickland is a figure known for controversy within the UFC, often sparking debate with contentious remarks regarding women’s rights and dismissive views on women’s MMA.
He was last in action in February, suffering a defeat to then-UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis in a dominant performance by the South African.
