Cameron Norrie’s Wimbledon campaign, which saw him defeat Frances Tiafoe before a quarter-final loss to Carlos Alcaraz, has been followed by an unexpected setback.

The British number two has been eliminated from the Canadian Open after a second-round defeat by world number 99 Aleksandar Vukic.

The 29-year-old suffered a 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 loss to the Australian player.

Norrie, currently ranked 39th after his Wimbledon performance, has not secured a singles title since 2023.

Despite notable victories during the grass court season, he has struggled to maintain momentum on the hard courts, falling behind 3-0 early in the opening set against Vukic.

Norrie appeared unwell, undergoing a blood pressure check during the second set, but managed to level the match.

However, his inability to capitalize on three break points in the rain-interrupted final set proved decisive against his unseeded opponent.

In the women’s event in Montreal, world number three Iga Swiatek marked her return since Wimbledon with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Chinese qualifier Guo Hanyu, breaking serve six times.

Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, saved successive match points to defeat 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

The 27-year-old overcame break points in the 10th game of the second set and recovered from a 5-2 deficit in the tie-break.

Osaka, ranked 49th globally, secured her first win against a top-20 player since her victory over Karolina Muchova at the Australian Open in January.

Having recently partnered with Tomasz Wiktorowski after parting ways with coach Patrick Mouratoglou, Osaka broke Samsonova twice in the deciding set to secure the win.

Ending a four-match losing streak in three-set encounters, she will now face Jelena Ostapenko in the third round, following the Latvian’s 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Mexico’s Renata Zarazua.

British number one Emma Raducanu is scheduled to compete against Peyton Stearns on Wednesday.
