In a tightly contested match, world number one Aryna Sabalenka narrowly averted a significant upset, battling back to defeat veteran Laura Siegemund and secure her place in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

The Belarusian, considered a strong contender for the title, had to rally from a break down twice in the deciding set to overcome the 37-year-old German with a final score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Sabalenka has now reached the final of the last three major tournaments. With several of her key rivals eliminated in the first week at SW19, her chances of reaching Saturday’s final are significantly enhanced.

However, few anticipated the formidable challenge presented by Siegemund, who had previously not advanced beyond the second round in singles competition at this venue.

Siegemund, renowned for her proficiency in doubles, effectively disrupted Sabalenka’s rhythm with her slices, exceptional returns, and deliberate pace of play.

It was Sabalenka’s resilience and determination that ultimately secured her victory after a grueling match lasting two hours and 54 minutes.

Siegemund will now face either 13th seed Amanda Anisimova or Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for the opportunity to compete in her first Wimbledon singles final.
