Transfer Window Reopens: Predicting Summer Moves

Speculation surrounds several players ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window, including Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.

The summer transfer window has reopened.

Premier League, EFL, and Scottish Premiership clubs can conduct business until 7 PM BST on Monday, September 1st.

Premier League clubs spent over £1.96bn last summer. Can this figure be surpassed in the coming weeks?

The early summer transfer window (June 1st-10th) saw Premier League clubs spend £400m.

Manchester City invested £116.2m in Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Marcus Bettinelli. Manchester United acquired Wolves’ Matheus Cunha for £62.5m.

This summer features two transfer windows.

The early window accommodated clubs participating in the Club World Cup. All clubs received a 10-day period to sign players, due to FIFA regulations limiting transfer windows to a maximum of 16 weeks annually.

Other notable early June signings include Liam Delap’s move from Ipswich Town to Chelsea (£30m), Brighton’s acquisition of Charalampos Kostoulas (£29.78m), and Liverpool’s signing of Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m).

Several players transferred internationally, notably Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid (£50m) and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid (£8.4m), and Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund (£27m).

Alexander-Arnold impresses with his Spanish at Real Madrid unveiling.

Following a successful first season, Liverpool manager Arne Slot appears focused on early transfer activity. After securing Frimpong, Liverpool agreed to a £116m deal for Florian Wirtz, and are expected to sign Milos Kerkez shortly.

Tottenham, under new manager Thomas Frank, are reportedly interested in Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo, previously subject to a £55m bid from Manchester United.

Both Manchester United and Arsenal are linked with Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres, while Arsenal are also reportedly close to signing Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi (£51m) and are linked with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha commented on the Gyokeres-Sesko debate, suggesting Sesko’s potential might make him a more promising investment.

Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle remains uncertain, though a departure seems unlikely given his recent Champions League success.

Crystal Palace’s FA Cup victory raises questions about player retention. Sami Mokbel reports Tottenham’s interest in Marc Guehi, while Eberechi Eze, with a £68m release clause, is reportedly linked with Bayern Munich.

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, also linked with Arsenal, had a strong season with 13 goals and 5 assists in the Bundesliga.

Simon Stone, chief football news reporter, on potential Old Trafford activity:

Departures are likely amongst loanees and surplus players. Early deals for players like Marcus Rashford, Antony, or Jadon Sancho seem less probable due to high wages and underperformance.

Alejandro Garnacho’s potential departure suggests he won’t return for pre-season. Interest exists in Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, though United prefer to retain Mainoo. Altay Bayindir’s future is uncertain, given his backup role and desire for regular first-team football.

Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport football news reporter, on Manchester City’s English internationals:

Jack Grealish’s omission from the Club World Cup squad suggests a potential £50m departure, though his high wages might deter suitors. Kyle Walker, with a year remaining on his contract, could be loaned out or transferred.

Nizaar Kinsella, BBC Sport football news reporter, on Stamford Bridge:

Jamie Gittens is a key target after Chelsea’s initial bid was rejected. Significant player sales are anticipated, including players like Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, and others. A new goalkeeper and central defender might be acquired, depending on sales.

Alex Howell, BBC Sport football news reporter, on Arsenal’s transfer activity:

Arsenal’s transfer activity has been notable despite a lack of completed deals. They are focused on a striker (Gyokeres and Sesko) and are reportedly close to signing goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
