The UK Prime Minister has announced the deployment of additional RAF jets to the Middle East amid escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. The deployment includes Typhoon fighter jets and air-to-air refueling aircraft, described as “contingency support across the region” by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Sir Keir, speaking en route to the G7 summit in Canada, emphasized the rapidly evolving situation and ongoing consultations with international allies. He stressed the UK’s consistent message advocating for de-escalation.
This marks a further commitment of UK military assets to the region, following a similar deployment last year aimed at preventing escalation. While declining to specify the extent of UK involvement in Israel’s defense, Sir Keir confirmed productive discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, focusing on Israel’s security. He reiterated the UK’s long-standing concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program and its recognition of Israel’s right to self-defense.
The Prime Minister also disclosed a conversation with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, during which they agreed on the urgent need for de-escalation in the Middle East. Iran has issued threats to target UK, French, and US military bases in the region should they provide support to Israel.
Recent days have witnessed a significant intensification of tensions, marked by renewed Iranian attacks on Israel and retaliatory Israeli strikes on Iranian military targets. Reports of casualties on both sides have emerged, adding to the gravity of the situation. Planned talks between Washington and Tehran concerning Iran’s nuclear program have been postponed.
