Marseille Sign Free Agent Gomes

Angel Gomes, capped four times by England at the senior level, is set for a new chapter in his career.

Marseille have agreed a deal in principle to sign the English midfielder on a free transfer.

The French club had been in negotiations with the 24-year-old, who announced his departure from Lille following the expiration of his contract this summer in May.

While Premier League sides Tottenham and West Ham were also reportedly interested, Gomes has opted to remain in Ligue 1.

Since his 2020 transfer from Manchester United, Gomes has amassed a commendable record of 10 goals and 19 assists across 134 appearances for Lille.

His international career includes four senior caps earned under former England interim manager Lee Carsley; however, he hasn’t featured under current manager Thomas Tuchel.

At Marseille, Gomes will join forces with former Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi and reunite with fellow Manchester United academy graduate Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood, 23, concluded last season as a joint top scorer in Ligue 1 alongside Paris St-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele, both netting 21 league goals.

Marseille’s second-place finish secured their place in next season’s Champions League group stage.
