Grealish’s Next Move After Manchester City

Jack Grealish’s time at Manchester City appears to be drawing to a close after a challenging two-season spell.

“It’s a dream come true to be part of this club,” Grealish stated upon joining City in 2021 for a British record fee of £100m.

While he achieved Premier League titles and a Treble, the past two seasons have proven less fruitful, with injuries and inconsistent performances limiting his appearances to just 17 Premier League starts.

This lack of playing time even cost him a place in the England squad for Euro 2024, highlighting a significant downturn in his fortunes.

The 2024-25 season saw Grealish play a mere 715 Premier League minutes, often finding himself as an unused substitute, particularly during City’s disappointing latter half.

His omission from City’s matchday squad for their final Premier League game and anticipated absence from the Club World Cup underscore a mutual agreement that a departure is necessary.

Despite Guardiola’s public appreciation for Grealish’s character and contributions to the team, the manager’s desire for a smaller squad next season further strengthens the case for his exit.

Grealish, also seeking a fresh start, is open to various options, prioritizing a permanent transfer over a loan move. City, while preferring a sale to recoup some of their initial investment, would consider a loan with significant wage contributions.

The Premier League remains a possibility, with clubs like Tottenham, Newcastle, Everton, and Aston Villa linked. However, his high wages (£300,000 per week) present a significant obstacle.

European clubs such as Barcelona (although initial interest has cooled), AC Milan, Napoli, Borussia Dortmund, and Inter Milan have also been mentioned, although wage demands would be challenging for all but the wealthiest. A move to Saudi Arabia remains a less desirable, though financially viable, alternative.

A return to Aston Villa, despite fan sentiment, appears unlikely given their current wage constraints and focus on reducing their wage bill. Newcastle offers better wage potential but faces its own financial limitations.

Ultimately, a loan move, potentially involving City subsidizing wages or a significant loan fee, may prove the most likely outcome, enabling a range of clubs to accommodate Grealish’s substantial salary.

Significant compromise will be needed from all parties involved to facilitate a summer transfer. The situation remains complex, but a departure seems inevitable.
